At VHCC, we understand that sometimes the hardest part is simply getting started. That’s why we’ve created the Nurse Ready program! Your Nurse Ready coach will work with you, one-on-one, helping you do everything necessary to prepare for admission to one of our nursing programs – and achieve your long-term goal of becoming an LPN or an RN.
Your coach will help you:
- Apply for admission to Virginia Highlands.
- Apply for financial aid that might be available.
- Develop a strategy to complete the prerequisite courses.
- Prepare for TEAS testing.
- Guide you through the final steps of the LPN or RN application process.
**Graduation from VHCC programs does not guarantee earning a license as an RN or LPN; nor certification as a CNA. Graduates must meet all requirements of the licensing/credentialing agency for their state of residence.

Track 1 offers an opportunity for recent high school graduates and other eligible adults to complete the nursing degree program after two years of full-time attendance (4 semesters and 1 summer session). This is a rigorous and academically challenging program.
The VHCC Nursing Program’s advance placement or “Transition Program,” is designed to grant advanced placement to LPNs who have been admitted to the VHCC Nursing Program and meet prerequisite requirements. Students who meet the eligibility requirements for the advanced placement will take “Transition Courses” in the summer term and then be eligible to take the sophomore level courses and graduate within one (1) academic year with an AAS Degree in Nursing.
Admission Requirements: Admissions requirements for the LPN to RN nursing program are the same as the regular program with the following exceptions:
Current LPN license.
Applicants must have graduated from an LPN program after May 15, 2021 OR provide documentation of one (1) year (2000 hours) of full-time LPN work experience in direct patient care during the past three years with written verification employer at the time of application.
Completion of 22 credits of support (general education) courses required for graduation from the Nursing program: BIO 141, BIO 142, BIO 150, ENG 111, ITE 119, PSY 230 and SDV, before enrolling for nursing classes. Additional required general education courses can be completed after acceptance to the program.
Upon completion of NSG 115, credit will be awarded for NSG 100, 106, 130, 152, 170 (16 credits). These credits will appear on the student’s official transcript.
The VHCC Nursing program part-time evening/weekend program is specifically designed for adults who are interested in becoming RN’s but have other responsibilities that limit their abilities to attend the rigorous scheduling of a full-time nursing program. Classes are delivered in a combination of evening, weekend, and online learning. The program is designed at a slower pace to be completed in four years. General education courses listed in Semester 1 & 2 must be completed before the student can begin nursing classes in nursing classes.
Admissions Requirements: Admissions requirements for the part-time evening/weekend program are the same as the regular program.

Most students will be ready within a matter of months! The first step is to meet with your Nurse Ready coach who will help you develop an individual plan.
You're certainly not alone if you're concerned about the math required for nursing. Many come to us with math as one of their greatest concerns. The good news is we have academic mentoring available to help you master what you need to know to complete the requirements for admission to our nursing programs.
Yes, our Nurse Ready program includes TEAS test tutoring. When it's time to take the TEAS test, your coach will work with you to arrange the help you need!
